Back Pain Q & A

What is back pain?

Back pain is common, and one of the leading causes of missed days at work, as well as disability. The severity of back pain can range from an annoying dull ache to a sudden, sharp, debilitating pain.

For many people, back pain is short-lived, lasting three days to three weeks. However, some people may continue to experience back pain even after the inciting incident or injury receives treatment. Chronic back pain, which refers to pain that lasts three or more months, can have a significant effect on the quality of life.

What causes back pain?

Back pain can develop from many causes, but the pain most often generates from a mechanical issue related to the structures that make up your back. Common causes of back pain include:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Disc herniations
  • Arthritis
  • Stenosis
  • Disc degeneration
  • Sciatica
  • Cervical, thoracic, or lumbar radiculopathy
  • Sacroiliac pain

The pain may have developed after an acute injury or trauma. You can also develop back pain due to degenerative changes that occur on your spine as you get older.

What can I expect during an evaluation for back pain?

Dr. Thurman at Vitality Spine & Sports Medicine is an experienced physician who always puts your needs above all else. When you come in for an evaluation for back pain, Dr. Thurman provides a thorough evaluation to determine a conclusive diagnosis.

During the evaluation, Dr. Thurman reviews your symptoms and medical history. He also conducts a physical exam and may request diagnostic tests to confirm or rule out a diagnosis, such as blood work or imaging tests.

What are the treatments for back pain?

Dr. Thurman always considers the natural approach to care first when treating patients with back pain. Your treatment plan may include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Chiropractic care
  • Posture corrections
  • Diet modifications

Dr. Thurman also offers platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell injections into the spine. PRP and stem cells accelerate the healing process and may support the regeneration of healthy tissue to replace any diseased or damaged tissue.

Before recommending any surgery, Dr. Thurman may suggest cutting-edge treatments to help relieve pain, such as ablation of sensory nerves. Dr. Thurman uses thin needles that require minimal downtime and allow you to get back to your usual activities the next day.
