Knee Pain Q & A

What is knee pain?

Many people experience knee pain at some point throughout their life. The type of pain you experience depends on the cause of your knee pain. Common knee pain symptoms include:

  • Dull ache
  • Sharp, shooting pain
  • Swelling
  • Difficulty bearing weight on the knee
  • Limited range of motion
  • Popping or crunching sensation

While you may be able to manage minor knee pain at home, if your knee pain developed after an injury or your pain is impairing your ability to use your knee, then it’s time to contact Vitality Spine & Sports Medicine to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Thurman.

What causes knee pain?

Knee pain can develop after an injury or due to the degenerative changes that occur to the various components that make up your knee as you get older. Athletes are especially prone to knee injuries due to the amount of stress and force they place on their knees. Some of the most common causes of knee pain include:

  • Knee arthritis
  • Kneecap arthritis
  • Meniscal tears
  • Patellofemoral syndrome
  • Fractures
  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Loose body
  • Dislocation

Knee pain can also develop from issues related to your ankle or hip. These joints work together to help carry the weight of your body. If one of the joints isn’t functioning normally, the other joints may need to carry a heavier load leading to pain.

What happens during a knee pain evaluation?

Dr. Thurman conducts thorough evaluations when you come to Vitality Spine & Sports Medicine seeking help for knee pain. His goal during your evaluation is to find the cause of your pain. With a conclusive diagnosis, Dr. Thurman can develop the most effective treatment plan to help you get relief from your pain and restore function to your knee.

During the evaluation, Dr. Thurman reviews your symptoms and medical history and conducts a physical exam. Diagnostic testing may be necessary to confirm or rule out a diagnosis.

What are the treatments for knee pain?

Dr. Thurman initially takes a natural approach to the treatment of knee pain, which includes physical therapy and diet modifications. Carrying excess body weight places extra stress and strain on your knees, which may exacerbate your pain. He may also suggest chiropractic care to improve overall joint alignment, which may ease any excess stress placed on your knee.

Depending on your needs, Dr. Thurman may suggest platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or stem cell injections to support the healing of your diseased or damaged tissue. He also offers a cutting-edge treatment to relieve pain without the need for surgery: Selective ablation of sensory nerves.
