Neck Pain Q & A

What are the symptoms of neck pain?

Neck pain symptoms can vary in both type and severity. With neck pain, you may experience:

  • A dull ache in your neck and/or shoulder muscles
  • Headaches
  • Muscle spasms
  • Decreased range of motion

Depending on the underlying cause of your neck pain, you may also experience tingling or burning sensations that run down your arms or legs, as well as muscle weakness.

While neck pain can resolve on its own with self-care at home, if your neck pain is severe or your pain has traveled to your extremities, it’s time to contact Vitality Spine & Sports Medicine for an evaluation with Dr. Thurman.

What causes neck pain?

Your neck pain may develop from poor posture, an injury, or degeneration of the discs in-between your vertebrae that occur as you age. Specific causes of neck pain include:

  • Herniated or bulging disc
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Arthritis
  • Whiplash
  • Cervical radiculopathy

Diseases, such as meningitis or cancer, can also cause neck pain.

How is the cause of neck pain diagnosed?

Dr. Thurman conducts a comprehensive examination to diagnose the cause of your neck pain. With a conclusive diagnosis, he can develop the most effective treatment plan that may resolve your neck pain altogether.

During the evaluation, Dr. Thurman reviews your symptoms and medical history. He also examines your neck and may request diagnostic imaging, such as an X-ray or MRI, to confirm or rule out a suspected diagnosis.

What treatments can relieve my neck pain?

Dr. Thurman develops individualized treatment plans to help you get relief from your neck pain based on the underlying cause. He always initiates the most natural treatment to help support your body’s own ability to heal, which may include physical therapy, chiropractic care, and diet modification.

Depending on your needs, Dr. Thurman may suggest cutting-edge treatments to relieve your pain without surgery, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or stem cell injections to assist in the healing process.
