Stem Cell Therapy Q & A

What are stem cells?

Due to the controversy surrounding stem cell therapy, you may not be aware that your body contains its own set of stem cells. These unique cells aren’t like any other type of cells in your body. They have the ability to renew and divide and transform into specialized cells, such as brain, muscle, or bone cells. Your stem cells serve as the repair system for your body.

The main types of stem cells include:

Embryonic stem cells

Embryonic stem cells are only present in three- to five-day-old embryos. These stem cells are referred to as pluripotent stem cells and have the ability to duplicate and transform into any specialized cell.

Adult stem cells

Adult stem cells are found in small numbers in your fatty tissue and bone marrow. These stem cells can’t transform themselves into any type of specialized cell like the embryonic stem cells can.

Researchers are studying stem cells to better understand the onset of disease and how stem cells can help treat a variety of diseases.

What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that uses the power of stem cells to help repair diseased and damaged tissue. During stem cell therapy, stem cells are injected directly into damaged or diseased tissue using guided imagery to ensure proper placement to get the desired results. To ease discomfort prior to your injection, Dr. Thurman may provide a local anesthetic.

You may experience some soreness at the site of the injection and Dr. Thurman may suggest activity modification following your stem cell therapy. However, he uses Harvard techniques to prepare the stem cells he uses for treatments, which allows for better healing than traditional preparation methods.

While results vary, you may start to notice an improvement in pain and function in as soon as three weeks, with continued improvements over the next six months.

Am I a good candidate for stem cell therapy?

Dr. Thurman determines if you’re a good candidate for stem cell therapy during a consultation. He takes a conservative approach to pain management and may suggest other treatment modalities, such as physical therapy, before recommending stem cell therapy.

If less invasive treatments fail to improve your pain or heal your injury, then he may suggest regenerative medicine. Some of the conditions that benefit from the innovative therapy include:

  • Sports injuries
  • Back and neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Knee pain
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal stenosis

In addition to stem cell therapy, Dr. Thurman offers platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP is a form of regenerative medicine that contains a high concentration of the healing properties found in your blood.
